Boost, C++ library

For people who came from software engineering background, all are familiar with STL, standard template library, having containers, iterators, algorithms, and functions. Now, quietly, there comes Boost library, which specializes on generic programming and meta-programming. The gossips over the internet indicated it to be high bar open source project, touching topics like linear algebra, regular expression, image processing... Most of the source files were just header files, no need for compilation. I think this library is next item to learn for people who just conquered STL. Check out these links:

Qt 4.7 partial rebuild took nearly 7h

Lately, I downloaded the latest Qt 4.7 for VS2008 from Nokia website. And found out that I have to rebuilt it statically in order to avoid loading Qt dlls. Since I need webkit and image support, I put down the following commands and wanted to get it ready after a coffee break:

C:\Qt\4.7.0>configure -static -qt-sql-sqlite -no-qt3support -no-opengl -platform win32-msvc2008 -no-dbus -no-phonon -no-phonon-backend -webkit -qt-libjpeg -no-mmx -no-openssl -qt-gif -qt-libpng -no-3dnow -qt-libtiff -multimedia -audio-backend

..
I got the partial rebuilt done in 7 h on my lenovo T61. It has built release and debug versions of above mentioned library.

Should Nokia move its headquarter to US?

In the open letter from J. Gerry Purdy on eweek.com, one of his seven recommendation was to persuade Elops to move Nokia headquarter to US. Very sharp ideas, indeed if you read it out. Gerry put the cause of Nokia's recent sluggish performance on the fact that it's geographically far away from U.S. Well, is that the reason? I doubted.

Every player in mobile arena were climbing two hills: the technology hill and the cost hill. The rule is clear, whoever take the summit will enjoy the big lumpsum; whoever can take both both summits will be king.

A fire destoryed Ericsson

In black&white area, Nokia, Ericsson and Morotola was competing with each other on: signal strength, voice quality and industrial design late in last century. At the turning point of new century, a fire in Philips factory in New Mexico caused serious financial loss to Ericsson, because Ericsson is single sourced. Although Nokia is affected by that fire, it begun already to take alternative sources and started to build cheaper and cheaper phones. In the end, Ericsson has to spin off its mobile division.

Moible user interface throw Siemens out
Early in 21st century, the theme : multimedia defined next summit. Colored LCD screen and 3G entered mobile phones. In 2005, Simens Mobile was sold to BenQ because it can not catch up the pace with competitors in upgrading its symbian user interface. But in 2006, BenQ had to liquidate Siemens Mobile. To climb the technology hill is not easy. Simens Mobile was the causalty.

Nokia N76 punched Motorola in face
Motorola's razer was then "iPhone" in the world: Thin, Light and Sleek. Razer was then a symbol of US technology. However, Motorola failed to diversify its product portfolio in 5 years after its first Razer. In 2007, Nokia launched N76, Nokia's "Razer", QVGA color display, 3G, music player, 2GB storage, send and receive emails, besides T, L, S. Motorola was then in trouble and soon disappear from Top 5 chart. Rumors were going around everywhere that it might split itself into two and therefore spin off mobile division when buyer approaches.

Steve Jobs's secret weapon
While Nokia is punching Motorola with N76 and is hitting BlackBerry with E66, Apple released their result of 3 year in house engineering: the revolutionary multi-touch iPhone , in 2007. From no where, Apple took the summit of technology hill. Maybe parachuted from the air, Nokia may feel like. But Nokia remained strong. However, the rule in mobile industry started to change. Apple introduced: the hill of usability and the ideology of ecosystem.

Android, the saver
When Sony-Ericsson and Motorola were tumbling during the financial crisis and the world were awaiting for them either to file bankcrupcy or go for auction, Android came to our scene. The internet knight, Google, bought a startup company named Android and started to enter mobile world with its powerful search services too. Android is fantastic, multi-touch capable and most importantly FREE, comparing to Symbian OS. Adroids were booming like mushrooms after rain. Indeed, people are bored with Nokia's engineer centric user interfaces: more then 7 steps to switch off bluetooth.

The paradox

Yes, it was as Gerry said, Nokia's north America market is "in toilet" but Nokia is flourishing in emerging markets: India and China, Latin America. Strange, isn't it? Though Nokia was confused about usaiblity hill and ecosystem, Nokia is still remain at the summit of the hill of cost and the technology hill. Don't laugh at me when I tell Nokia is still at the technology hill, because I would laugh at how Apple advertise itself: iPhone 3GS got 3G after Nokia had 3G for long; iPhone Video Call after Nokia had video for ages..

How shall we conclude from the brief war history of mobile phones? How shall we suggest to Nokia on what to do next? How shall Elops decide his radical strategy to transform Nokia? I would call it the conflict between mobile phone world and PC world. Nokia, Google and Apple were strong in their own teritory. When the border between a mobile phone and a laptop PC disappeared in 2005, Google and Apple decided to compete with Nokia. Apparently, OPK also decided to step in to PC world via Ovi online store. At the moment, it looks like Goolge and Apple have a upper hand, but the game just began though it's been few years. I don't believe stakeholders of Google would like to give free "food" to Motorola and Sony-Ericsson, HTC. Google is yet to play another drama with his Android followers, like Bankers are dealing with its borrowers. The high end market in the world are saturated with iPhones at the moment in recent 3 years. What will Apple do to keep tangible revenue growth? Remember the fact is it took Nokia 4-5 years to catch Motorola's Razer.

Let's come back to Gerry's seven suggestion to Nokia's CEO Stephen Elops. Gerry is right in the aspect that Nokia shall use the think tank in US to upgrade its industrial design and improve its consumer appeal. I think that's the key to climb the hill of usability. However to climb up the hill of ecosystem, Gerry has not got clear directions. Moving headquarter would be just a political show only, may raise people's eyebrow for a while but I don't see any positive effect.

Ignored Highlights of Nokia N8

Nokia N8 is shipping today.. here are a couples of highlights that Nokia did not strongly emphasize:

1) "Free of PVC, free of brominated & chlorinated compounds and free of antimony trioxide as defined in Nokia Substance List, bio-based materials in inner parts of the product" ---> Envrionment friendly!

2) Clear Black Display on N8 is "Blacker than Black". Look at CBD comparision with iPhone

3) HDMI output and 5.1 dolby digital , it's not just owesome but superb!!

4) USB host, you can connect your gadgets to your N8, thus use them as slave drives.

QNX joins crowded mobile market

Blackberry just launched their PlayBook, joining the iPad, presenting themselves in 7 inch mobile device market. What's shocking is they used QNX, which is in embedded system market for really long time. People in mobile phone world has never heard bout it. Well, customer wouldn't care what OS runs in it. But most heard mobile OS is: Symbian and Android, iOS...

The famous QNX is a serious mission critical real time operating system. Linux in general is not a RTOS. A special distribution, RTOS linux, is close to real time performance. But would you put it to control your Nuclear plant? Right you will think it twice about it. Symbian is a real time operating system but its UI is not fashionable. Look at the following video, it feels the UI is up to expectation.

Now the point is Blackberry is in need of another OS, not blackberry OS, to run higher HW specification: such as 1GHz processor, 1GB memory, HDMI, Open GL, High resolution. The OS is QNX who would not be abusive as Google was suspected to be in the near future.. because QNX got no services to bundle. Blackberry will heavily rely on iPad developers to port their applications over. I guess Blackberry will give more freedom to developers, thus to compete against iPad.

Sony Ericsson Abandons Symbian?!

That's not true! By reading the post on OSnews.com, I disagree that Sony-Ericsson abandons symbian. Android gave a deep breathe of Sony-Ericsson but I doubted it will last long. Look at the original news post, Sony Ericsson just don't have any plan for products using Symbian platform FOR NOW and Aldo Liguori did not say definitely that they won't have ever.

For mobile manufacturer like Sony Ericsson, who does not have their own operating system, they will be always the situation where their nose was dragged by operating system vendors. Sony Ericsson was doing Symbian phone, but is bearing big loss lately. If it should not be Android gave a hand of profit, the company would either be bankcrupt or bought by others. Android did help Motorola too. For the time being, Android is the shining star, mobile company saver. However, the question is how long the honeymoon will last? When the Google boat will not have enough food to eat, they will come back to Symbian boat or Meego boat. Samsung has forseen this. Samsung has Bada operating system and had LiMo, like Meego.

So, For Sony Ericsson, it will be good to have their own operating system, to boost their portforlio.

gtk+ for S60 project is dead?

If you google "gtk for s60", you will get the following link upfront.

http://code.google.com/p/gtk-for-symbian/

GTK for symbian. The statements says once cairo, pango and font-config were done, gtk+ for s60 will start...

If you click through "cairo for symbian",

http://code.google.com/p/cairo-for-symbian/

You would find cairo, pango, font-config were ported successfully to Symbian. However, there's no activities at all. Is this project dead?

I questioned myself : why gtk for s60 were not done? Hence the next link will tell:

http://www.wikivs.com/wiki/GTK_vs_Qt

"GTK requires X server and a window manager to be able to show the hello world..."... I questioned if it's true?.. Because I have used GTK+ for windows, I don't think my gtk hello world used X server or window manager at all.. That means, GTK for symbian/s60 would not require X server nor window manager.

I guess technically it's viable to get GTK for symbian. The immediate question next is:

What for?.. It takes time, takes effort.. Assume GTK was in Symbian, what's the benefit of it? what great thing people would see?

I could not answer those questions myself. Unless GTK proves its usefulness in mobile space, such a porting job would be meaningful. Geek's passion and hacker's feeling of achievement could be the motivation too. Qt entered mobile space already, to get GTK for symbian , better to have even a strong reason why is GTK better than Qt..? Unless there is superb application written GTK could have been ported to symbian after gtk was ported.

The key question lies here: what will GTK bring to mobile space, which s60, andriod, Qt, windows mobile, iOS4 does not have? What's the uniqueness of GTK in mobile?

The pain of using Symbian^3 PDK

First of all, the developer wiki of symbian org has messy documentation on the usage of Symbian^3 PDK. That made me realize why each newspaper need an chief editor. It's very time consuming to get out useful information in a good order. Not easy to use.

Second, downloading of the PDK zips take too long time and error prone. What's funny is: at the end when you got all zips, wiki says "current version does not have fully functioning Full UI rom image, wait for patch please".. What? I spent so long time downloading it and in the end, I don't get what I want.

Thirdly, the tools.. there are just so many tools: PDK kit 1.7.. active perl, active python, hg.. Why can they be bundled togather..? LAMP, XAMP were together , weren't the

Use your N8 or C7 as a torch?

My indian friend told that the torch phones were very popular. On a dark village road, walking with a torch phone is more high-tech than walking with the real torch.

Now with Symbian^3 phones, you can use the torch feature. Where is it?... Do I need to download an app from Ovi Store? ... It comes with the firmware. On Nokia's touch phones, there is a lock switch. The switch can be used to lock the phone so that you can put it in your pocket or bag. Now, move the lock switch to the direction which locks the device but don't release it. Hold the position there for long time, up to 8 seconds, the camera flash light will be on. To switch it off, you perform that action again.

SymbianLogo_TextShell not usable in Symbian^4 Kernel Taster Kit 4.1

After a long summer holiday, the author started learning how to do open source programming as a novice. The first disappointment came from Symbian^4 Kernel Taster Kit. Well, open source things are famous for broken-fixing-bf-N-times-before-stability. The last state, openly "stability" is better than commercially "stability". That's why commercial world likes open source projects, maybe.

The individual case is: I compiled and ran SymbainLogo_TextShell in QEMU in windows. That application crashed for many different reasons:

1) No Symbain.bmp file include KTK4.1 and KTK4.0, thus nothing to be read
2) the screen resolution of KTK4.x is 640x360, while the program hard coded to 640x479,... bang!
3) the size of the symbian.bmp is hard coded to 480x480 so if you used picture of 360x360... crash!

Since it's normal to get disappointment as like learning to swim will not avoid the chances of drinking water using nose, I shall not complain. No use, isn't it? Therefore, do something positive, as you would suggest. Here're the error reports to Symbian Foundation:

A)SymbianLogo_TextShell application has fixed screen resolution to: 640x479
http://developer.symbian.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=3696

B)SymbianLogo_TextShell application in KTK4.1 does not include symbian.bmp
http://developer.symbian.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=3697

Before those bugs were fixed, my suggestion to newbies like me is: DO NOT TRY IT AS IT DOES NOT WORK.

You might have guessed right that it'll be fast to use "scp", as you use that tool heavily on normal linux transfers. So, here come the easy steps:

1) Go to maemo org and find out openssh:

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/openssh/

Then click "Download" inside your N900.

2) During the installation process, you'll be asked a password. Do remember it because you need it later to do "scp".

3) After installation, please do a reboot.

4) Then you would need a custom N900 widget to show IP address on your home screen. Please visit the following link:

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/iphome/

get ip home installed.

5) Then from your development linux, do "scp your_path/your_file root@your_ip:/your_path" . Press enter and type the password you just entered a while ago.

6) if you want, do "ssh root@your_ip" then change directory to your path, launch your program from your ssh. You will see it run in N900 box.

Social Messaging Handsets

Today, Nokia announced 3 social messaging phones: C3, E5 and C6, falling in different price range, targeting at different user group. C3 costs less than 100 Euros, looks youngish. Many young people will find it very attractive. E5 cost a little more than 200 Euros, looks business. Small business and individuals who likes E72 but is shy off because of its price tag, would take E5. C6 costs less than 300 Euros, looks like N97 mini but provide good value for money. C6 should be another choice for Touch lovers. Why should people buy more expensive Samsung for the same functionalities?

What's so called social messaging? Blackberry was the first company bringing in emails to mobile phones. Now, Nokia phones brand itself by the factor that they allow user to set up to 10 email boxes and can set up 90% of world's email services. However, social messaging is not limited to emails. Instant chat was another feature, All 3 new phones and Nokia C5 includes chat services, such as live messenger, yahoo, google talk, as well as ovi chat. Your closest friends' contact can be put on the idle screen(Nokia calls it home screen).

By comparing with Blackberry's offering, C3 is positioned to compete Blackberry's Curve series, for example, Blackberry Curve 8320 has only 2.0Mpx camera, 320x240 2.5inches display, email capability.

E5 is to compete against Blackberry's Bold series. Latest Bold 9700 only got 3.15Mpx camera while E5 got 5Mpx camera. Both devices got the same internal storage, but E5 supports 32GB SD card while Bold 9700 supports only half of that. As a good messaging devices, the speed matters. E5 got 3G, HSPDA speed at 10.2Mbps while Bold 9700 got 3.6Mbps for HSPDA. Choice is clear, isn't it?

C6 is to beat Blackberry's Storm2 9520. Both devices got the same HSPDA speed at 7.2 Mbps. Both got office capability: Document viewer for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF. However, C6 has 5Mpx camera, Strom2 9520 not; C6 has full querty keyboard, Storm2 9520 not; C6 has proximity sensor for auto turn off, for example if you put the touch enable phone near your phone, accidentially your face would touch hang up button on the screen, it's very important to have proximity sensor with touch phones nowadays. Storm2 9520 does not have the sensor. C6 is cheaper than Strom2 9520 at the last.

Besides all above comments, it's worthy to add that E5 and C6 has free walk and drive navigation(Nokia Ovi Maps 3.0). So, there is no doubt that Blackberry will be put under extreme pressure in current market situation. It has been great that Blackberry, coming with its special email enabled, full querty key pad equiped Blackberry 6230, spearheaded smart phone market for so long. But now, Blackberry has gone over the challenger's phase because its competitors can make better devices in their own form factor and their product portfolio. It's time for Blackberry to re-invent itself and fight back. A great company should be not only a good challenger but also a fierce fighter in the battle ground.

What's in iPhoneOS 4.0

Following N900's benchmarking capability "Multi-tasking" that enables listening to music while browsing the internet. Now, iPhoneOS finally supports "Multi-tasking" too. Double click the "Home" key to view all applications. No. 2 feature is "Folder", that allows user to categorize applications. Like Ovi mail solution, "Unified" email box was the No.3 feature. "iBooks" will be extended to iPhone by iPhoneOS4.0 too. Enterprise support and game center are added too.

Except "iBooks", aren't all features familiar? With Nokia S60 products:

1) Long press menu key to bring a list of applications running at the same time
2) Nokia had already the "Folder" concept in its menu grid.
3) Ovi mail supports a number of popular email services, such as hotmail, gmail, yahoo, ovi mail. And it also supports at Mail for Exchange by the same application
4) Nokia had already "games" folder for long , as well as game center. Checkout n-gage keyword.

So, the question is : Will iPhoneOS 4.0 make iPhone more like Nokians? Undoubtedly, iPhone was the game changer since 2007. However, how long will the momentum continue? Moto's Razer was, like iPhone, released in 2003 and leading the market's "WOW" factor. Exactly, in 2007, Nokia released N76, Nokia's version of Razer. From 2008, Moto started to experience "the universal gravity". Now looking forward to 2011, will iPhone still lead the smart phone market? iPhoneOS 4.0 does give Apple's device a major boost, but it seems to be fixing the technical gaps, which was ignored by iPhone users. When "Touch" is not the magic word anymore in the smart phone market, iPhone users will naturally demand for more. And when "Touch" is not a differenciating feature anymore, the post-"iPhone" generation will then choose again from Apple, Nokia, Samsung, LG, Sony-Errison, HTC. What will the smart phone market look like in 2011?

Watch me on qik!

Have you got a smart phone? Yes! But have you tried qik? Not really. Here comes the exciting experience with qik. Qik promised to share your daily life privately with your family using your smart phone. How does it come true?

The blogger went directly to qik download(http://qik.com/m) on N78 over WLAN access. Qik mobile page was quick to navigate me to its own download page. The installable package was 642kb only, quite fit application. It takes less than 1 minute to install.

No account , no previous experience. Qik mobile UI navigate the blogger to create a new account on the fly. With a just registered account, Qik camera application launched. This camera viewfinder has no difference to standard camera's one. However, press record. Then the magic happened. On the viewfinder, a line of text tells that the live broadcast video can be accessed via http://qik.com/your_qik_account_name. The blogger was curious about what would happen if I put the URL in my PC's browser. Wow~! My camera content appeared in my PC. What a genius application!! The broadcasted video can be watched by many people , not just one. On mobile side, it also tells how many people are watching live broadcast and what are the delay between your capture and the live boardcast. Don't forget, voice were recorded and transmitted too.

It definitely has the WOW factor. The blogger could imagine qik in reality that one could show live video of FIFA match in South Africa to their friends or parents in UK, if he/she has fixed payment for the 3G data traffic. To be honest, the live broadcast has major quality issue. The live video was not smooth. The blogger also noticed the delay increases along with the length of the video record. But, after the live video sharing was stopped and uploaded, the stored video on qik web site can be viewed smoothly without delay or jitter effect.

All in all, qik has its own credit. It's a successful demonstration on how best and usable mobile services could be. Any time and any where, you can share your live experience with your next-of-kin. In qik's case, it's what you see, what you hear and what you say.

Discover Vertu

Mysterious Atlantis was found 620 miles off the west cost of Morocco near Cannary Islands in Google Ocean, while Vertu, Nokia’s luxury phone manufacture and sales arm, headquartered in in Church Crookham, Hampshire, United Kingdom, can be easily spotted on Google Satellite pictures. The report that Vertu launched 4 new luxury phones, priced at 20 million yen, in its Tokyo flagship shop draw the attention of the blogger to this unique, high quality brand.

Vertu was officially founded in July, 1998. Frank Nuovo, Vertu's principle designer, was behind Vertu Series, as well as Nokia phones. He proposed the industrial design and full business case for Vertu in 1997 and get Nokia board's approval at 1998. He and his colleagues pioneered in colors, materials and trend design.

Vertu Signature, the first ever model was introduced in Paris, in 2002. Now, Vertu is an established luxury band , with seven series: Constellation (Constellation Edition), Ascent TI (titanium metal track), Ascent (track), Signature (Signed Edition), Signature Diamonds (Crystal Diamond Series), collection of models (with sub - 6 Legend of runway designs and Ferrari 1947 limited edition), Special Edition (strawberry and cream-color series).

In terms of craftsmanship, Vertu went to extreme. It took a fresh person a year to learn to assemble a Vertu phone, while on the contrary Nokia production line assemble a phone in minutes from components to complete package. All details have been taken care of : Swiss watch screws, distinctive “Sandpiper” ringtones, special click sound, laser drilled keypad, plasma ceramic pillow, top illumination of Ascent Ti keypad. All aimed for iconic symbol for the owner.
